Salary Basis Essentials:  The Things You Might Be Doing Wrong!



The Fair Labor Standards Act was enacted 80 years ago, but to this day still poses compliance challenges for employers.  For salaried exempt employees, the challenges include compliance with the intricacies of the “salary basis” test.  How is an exempt employee paid a “salary?”  It’s not as obvious as it may seem.  This presentation will address the intricacies.

Mr. Roby graduated with highest honors from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law.  He is certified by the Minnesota State Bar Association as a labor and employment law specialist. He has been named a Super Lawyer every year of the program’s existence.  He practices with the Duluth firm of Johnson, Killen & Seiler.

Plan Recognize Respond Report - Preventing Workplace Violence


Are you prepared to handle incidents of workplace violence if they occur in your place of business? Do you have a plan in place to protect your workers? If you are not proactive you are gambling with your employees' welfare and lives. Understand early warning signs of workplace violence and how to prepare a plan for the facility, for team workers and for individual employees. Learn about the four categories of workplace violence and the best practices to protect your business and employees.

This workshop is designed to give employees simple tools to address workplace violence. Employees will be able to plan for prevention, recognize impending signs of violence, respond in an appropriate and timely fashion and understand the importance of reporting.

Vikki Sanders is a Safety Consultant Principal for OSHA Consultation Unit.  She has trained, investigated and consulted on the issues of workplace violence for 29 years.  She has worked 7 years as an OSHA investigator and 22 years as a consultant specializing in workplace violence, and general industry safety.  Vikki has taught over 570 businesses and 57,000 employees on safety topics to a variety of industrial settings including but not limited to long term care, hospitals, healthcare, education, manufacturing and business.

Stacy Johnston is the founder of Audacity HR Solutions and HR Learning Lab. She works with organizations on Human Resource solutions, training and development. As an HR enthusiast, Stacy’s goal is to help organizations understand and engage their biggest competitive advantage… their employees!

Stacy is a licensed attorney in the State of Minnesota, holds a B.A. in Personnel Management, and has earned the SHRM-CP and PHR credentials. She is an adjunct instructor at the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), where she teaches in the Human Resource Management Department.

Stacy is a former Board member at NHRA, is a member of the Programming Committee and a mentor with the NHRA mentor program. She also serves on the Board for the Lake Superior Chapter of the Association for Talent Development and is a member of the National Speakers Association. Stacy enjoys teaching yoga, spending time with family and friends, recreating on our beautiful parks and trails, travelling and cooking (and eating!).

NHRA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY 


Request for volunteers for the resume critique station at the Northland Job Fair on April 12th at the DECC (Free Parking!).  Resume critiquers can sign up for half-hour timeslots (as many as you’d like!) throughout the day from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  For those attending the NHRA educational meeting that day, what a nice post-meeting activity, to walk down to the DECC and share some expertise!  To sign up or for questions, contact Betsy Hill, bhill@duluthmn.gov or 218-730-5228.

The Minnesota PIPELINE (Private Investment, Public Education, Labor and Industry Experience) Project is an innovative approach to address current and future workforce needs.  It serves as a catalyst for developing industry-based, employer-driven, dual-training programs throughout the state.  The program targets four high-growth industry sectors with limited experience with Minnesota's apprenticeship system:

*advanced manufacturing
*agriculture
*healthcare services
*information technology


By leveraging Minnesota's success with registered apprenticeship and focusing on the targeted industries, the PIPELINE Program is assisting employers to change the question from "How do we get workers with the skills we need? to "How do we give workers the skills we need?"  Dual training, like apprenticeship, is an earn-as-you-learn approach where the employer invests in its employee by building a training infrastructure, developing career pathways and investing in the employee's education.
