MONTHLY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Judy Aspling

HR Director

Center City Housing Corp

Judy is currently the HR Director at Center City Housing Corp., a non-profit agency in Duluth that provides affordable permanent housing and services to those most in need, most notably, long-term homeless individuals and families.  Judy says, “I go home every day feeling good about the fact that I’m contributing in a small way to giving back dignity and hope to those who deserve nothing less.”  She is also the owner of the Curves in Superior, a workout facility for women…ask her about a membership discount!

Although she’s held positions that encompassed some aspects of HR over many years, she’s only been an “HR Professional” since 2006.  She joined SHRM and NHRA at that time and discovered then that she’d finally found what she wanted to be when she grew up.  She’s served on the NHRA Board for 10 years in several roles, and attributes attaining her current position at CCHC to the “amazing network of HR friends” she’s made over the years.

She also serves on the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, and volunteers on the boards of the Friends of the St. Croix Headwaters, and Friends of the Bird Sanctuary.  In her spare time, she enjoys life in the woods on the St. Croix River in Gordon and says Kayaking Rocks!

The City of Duluth along with other partners are organizing to try and help employers plan for workforce gaps and skill development.  The purpose of the series is to support employers in the NE Region by:

A) identifying strategies that help businesses adapt to changes in labor force and declining availability of workers in the region and

B) providing tangible solutions to employee recruitment and retention challenges.

HUMAN RESOURCES COMPLIANCE CERTIFICATE

Managing compliance and risk in your organization

Over the past decade, businesses and non-profit organizations have faced increasing demands to comply with a myriad of government regulations in a rapidly changing legal landscape. Today, human resources professionals are responsible for the design, administration, and enforcement of many of the policies that address these regulations while ensuring compliance and managing risk for the organization.

This program offers intensive, practice-based training for human resources professionals and their advisors in identifying and evaluating compliance requirements, while also being able to work with stakeholders to effectively implement compliance programs within their organizations.

Register for program start date Jan 31 or March 28.

WE ARE STILL IN NEED OF

 HR MENTORS!

What is the College Mentorship Program? It connects college students pursing a degree in Human Resource (HR) with HR professionals in the community.

What is the purpose? Provide students with HR experience out of the classroom, as well as networking experience, through a guided mentorship. Each student is matched with a mentor based on HR areas of interest. Plus you as the mentor may learn something and get a little extra work done.

What are the expectations? You are asked to spend at minimum 1-2 hours a month between January – May with your mentor assigned to you. Actives may include but are not limited to; job shadowing, reviewing resumes, mock interviewing, attending a job fair, attending an NHRA/educational meeting, or other special projects/tasks.

Are you interested in making a difference?

Please complete this FORM (typed is best) and return it to me, Tara Swenson (College Relations Director) at tara.swenson@slhduluth.com or call me at 218-249-8822.

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you.  Tara
